A documentary which chronicles the life and career of renowned Canadian balladeer and poet, Leonard Cohen. The bard of Montreal has written songs that have struck a chord with several generations now, and his influence on modern song writing carries arguably as much weight as a Dylan or a Van Morrison. In 2005, director Lian Lunson travelled to The Sydney Opera House to capture a concert called 'Came So Far for Beauty' - a tribute to Cohen performed by contemporary artists including Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker, Rufus Wainwright and Beth Orton. The film also features a unique performance of the Cohen classic 'I'm Your Man' with the man himself on vocal and U2 backing him. These performances are scattered with clips of Cohen in a candid and humorous interview.

12:30: LUNCHEON WITH LEONARD COHEN POETRY READINGS @ Tebaldi’s Restaurant, Temenos
(R200.00pp pre-bookings essential)
Enjoy a fabulous meal prepared by the staff of Tebaldi’s and enjoy readings of some of Cohen’s iconic poetry.

16:00 – 17:50: Film @ Wahnfried: BIRD ON A WIRE (by donation at the door, advisable to pre-book your seat)
Tony Palmer directs this film documenting Leonard Cohen's 1972 'Bird on a Wire' tour. The 20-city European tour, which began in Dublin on 18 March 1972 and ended on 21 April in Jerusalem, caught Cohen at the pinnacle of his career despite the concerts being plagued by technical and personal problems. Palmer splices Vietnam War footage and home movies from Cohen's childhood into the performance footage, creating a powerful testament to the singer's unique fusion of poetry and politics.

20:00 – 21:00: Live event @ Wahnfried: KOOS VAN DER MERWE singing Leonard Cohen songs (R120.00pp - pre-bookings essential)
Koos is a veteran of our Poetry in McGregor weekends and has delighted audiences with his Afrikaans versions of Leonard Cohen. This is a special event, and should not be missed!

The septuagenarian singer-songwriter captured live at London's 02 Arena on July 17th 2008. The concert comprises 26 of his finest songs including 'Hallelujah', 'Suzanne', 'First We Take Manhattan', 'The Future', 'So Long, Marianne', 'Bird On the Wire' and 'Dance Me to the End of Love'.

Invitation to submit a proposal for “Poetry in McGregor” 2017

Following on from the tremendous success of our 2016 event, we are happy to confirm the date for the next “Poetry in McGregor” weekend – this event will take place from the 25th to the 27th of August 2017. This will be our fifth weekend of glorious poetry! We are now inviting submission proposals from poets wishing to participate.

Our theme this year is “Rooted in heart” and presentations aligning themselves to this theme will be given first consideration. The language of presentation is English or Afrikaans or bilingual (or one of our South African languages, but please be aware that this may limit the size of your audience). We encourage submissions that are innovative and creative (involving more than one art form) to enhance our programme and attract a diverse audience. You are more than welcome to collaborate with fellow poets and submit a proposal for a combined performance, discussion or interview. The duration of your presentation should be between 40 and 50 minutes. You will be allocated one slot initially but if there is space permitting on the programme, you may be offered a second slot for a different or repeat presentation.

Proposals for workshops are also welcome. Workshops are 2 hours in duration and can accommodate between 8 to 15 participants.

Please be aware that our venues are small and intimate with subdued lighting. No audio or visual equipment is provided. By participating in Poetry in McGregor, you grant permission for us to include at least one of your poems in the accompanying Anthology, unless you expressly indicate that you do not wish your work included.

Poets need to make arrangements for their own transport to McGregor (a 2 hour drive from Cape Town), accommodation and meals. Depending on funding and sponsorship received and ticket sales for the event, the management committee may be able to offer participating poets some financial compensation for subsistence and travel. Please note that there is no guarantee or promise of this compensation and poets wishing to participate and submitting a proposal to do so, are agreeing to being able to pay their own travel, accommodation and meals expenses. We are optimistic that as our event grows each year sponsors and patrons for this wonderful event will come more fully on board. We welcome any suggestions you might have regarding companies or individuals who would like to support and promote our event.

Tickets will be sold through Computicket and at the door (space permitting) with prices ranging from R25.00 to R120.00. Money collected from ticket sales becomes part of the event’s funding to cover the cost of various expenses e.g. marketing and publicity, venue and equipment hire etc. Once all the costs and expenses have been covered, money is then donated to local community projects in McGregor, namely The McGregor Unistars Brass Band; The Next Step Dance Company; First Step Ballet McGregor; The Violini Group; Die Byekorf Creche; The Breede Skills Centre; Gospel Groups; McGregor Library etc. Audited financial statements of the “McGregor Arts Community Project” NPO #151-551 / PBO #930051215 are available on request by emailing our chartered accountant, Anthony Coombe - acoombe@iafrica.com

Please submit information of your presentation/s as follows:

· Your name

· Title of the presentation / workshop

· A short description of your presentation in the language that it will be presented

· A micro-blog of yourself plus any links or websites that may be of interest to the selection panel

Successful applicants will be notified by 30 April 2017 and more detailed information will be requested for the programme. Unsuccessful applicants are warmly invited to attend our event and participate in one of the several Open Mic sessions that will be included in the programme. We value your interest and support and look forward to welcoming you either as a featured poet on our main programme or as a participant in the Open Mic sessions.

______________________________________________________________

Poetry in McGregor 2017 poster

A huge bouquet of thanks to local artist, Edna Fourie and Ewan van Wyk for another beautiful poster for the 2017 edition of “Poetry in McGregor”.

Design inspiration:

'Rooted in heart’ (we are all connected)

The tree design has matured since last year. The tree is no longer 'attached' to the font of the word 'poetry'. It now stands independently

- and it stands proudly centre stage. This expresses its growing strength.

The tree shows itself as a symbol of transparency by baring its roots [for the first time] and that which the root system is anchored to, namely 'heart'.

The overall design has a softer, more feminine feel [heart energy] - especially expressed through the softer and less specific colour scheme.

Ontwerpmotivering:
